Fair price to climb a mast?

Eldest son, a climber, is going up my mast to replace bulbs, anchor, tri, steaming and deck LED's. I was going to bung him £50 plus a few pints. A mate on a nearby boat wants said son to fit a NASA mast head and a bracket and Glomex. What should I suggest as fair payment?

Son has fitted several on his own boat as well as mine over the years and knows what he is doing. He is an experienced rock climber and has the use of my Bosuns Chair as well as his own harness etc.
I'll charge £45 and happy with two pints.

Having to pay your son anything at all does not say a lot for your relationship with him does it
I think that if I had to admit that to the world I would feel I had failed somewhere along the line

What an odd thing to say. Says more about the sort of person you are than anything I could say. Our children owe us nothing. We choose to have them. If you genuinely think that somehow simply being a parent infers we have rights I pity your offspring.

How much did your son give you for items you have given him in the past?
My son does loads for me and vic versa but nothing changes hands other than good will and thanks.

My god there are some twisted people on here. I'd be willing to bet the op's relationship with his/her son is better than any relationship the nasty squad have with anyone.

Let him decide... and do the negotiation??

Paying kids for this kind of task is a personal decision with no right or wrong answer.

However, as others have suggested, charging a non-family member a commercial fee opens up a real can of worms, including a claim for direct and/or consequential liabilities arising from faulty fitting, incorrect wiring, etc. Once again, it's a judgement call, but if it were my son I'd suggest a few beers if he liked the guy, otherwise a polite excuse with a recommendation for a competent professional, who doesn't have to be a rigger. They will almost certainly do as good if not a better job for just a few quid more.

I think some on here are excessively bureaucratic/litiginous. I'd like to think my sons would not accept monetary payment from their old dad but I expect they'd appreciate it if offered. Reminds me of the country and Western weepy 'No charge'.

My daughter used to charge people £20 to go up their mast to change bulbs and retrieve lost halyards etc. I think that going up my mast was done for free as it was "advertising", once she was up our mast other folk would often wander along with requests for Kate to do something similar on their boats.

What's the problem with paying your kids to do stuff,my boy is a builder, he is currently laying me a patio, I will pay him the going rate for the job...I would rather he gets the money rather than a stranger.
