Failed toast

Well, I was not comparing two plates. Only 1 is a plate - the toast.
In the useless toaster I bought (eBay, £3.50) the stainless sheetmetal radiator became more like a point source than a plate. There is a round rig of red heat about 50mm diameter. If the "plates" were parallel, things would be different. But the toast sits (as designed) at about 60 degrees to the heat source.
You're probably right that "inverse square law doesn't apply", but its perhaps somewhere between the extremes we started with.
Distance from heat source to lower crust - perhaps 25mm. Distance to upper crust? perhaps 100mm. Result?: warm upper crust, burnt lower.

nice link!

the type of flat basket that goes under the cover on an Arga stove top.
Waste of money. Just put the bread on the hot plate and put the cover down. Turn it a bit later and you will have great toast that is freshly hot so the butter or spread soaks in properly.

hot non-stick frying pan

works a treat

you do have a frying pan I assume

D

Great for cheese on toast as well which you can't do on hob top toasters. Needs making upside down though...make the toast, then lay the sliced cheese on a warmed non-stick frying pan in the shape of a slice of bread, then plonk the toast on top of the cheese, press down for a few seconds and when the toast is lifted the cheese will now be melted and stuck to it. I discovered this method when bored on a rainy day in Scotland (one of very many),

Some good tips here for basic cooking. Does doing toast in a frying pan damage the pan? Incidentally, is it only us Brits that must have toast for breakfast? Here in France, most people don't have a toaster but you CAN buy ready made toast in leclerc.

A word of caution, I've heard that non stick frying pans can be a health hazard, if they get overheated. Something to do with the coating.

pan unscathed by the experience of being used as toaster

as for fumes being given off from hot non-stick

never experienced them yet

guess I had better put that down to yet another risky thing I do

candles in boats, boiling cans, heating up frying pans, elderly life jackets worn under anoraks

- whatever next?

It's something pirates with a parrot on their shoulder have to be aware of because the gas given off is bad for birds in particular. It's called Polly-mer fume fever.
