Witnessed this death last week.

http://www.thelocal.fr/20140613/teen-dies-in-new-french-facebook-challenge

Very traumatic and sad, so stupid and so avoidable. Resulted in having to give a statement to the police as a primary witness - first, and hopefully last, time inside a French police station.

Please bring to the attention of any young people you may be involved with and stress just what can happen when things go wrong.

Sadly, not just in France. Six university students drowned together at night in the sea in Portugal this winter carrying out some sort of initiation challenge. One survived, thought to be the leader, but he's claiming amnesia.

People have been daring each other to do silly things forever; the fact that this one happens over Facebook instead of in a pub is not of any particular significance.

Tying a large metal object to your leg before jumping into a river, though .

Sorry no sympathy

I mean come on if you're a supposed sentient human being that chooses to jump into pretty cold water with a bike tied to you; well to my mind (in evolutionary terms) you weren't really meant to go the distance, if fact i'd take a positive from this & say this man to be celebrated along with all the other idiots who do such things for helping to chloronate the gene pool.

Lets check the final score.......................

A thread of a concerned parent?

It must be awful for the parents involved. Im sure accidental death is recorded.

i was a child once: i dare you to do this, friend: i double dare you to do it, you cant go back on a double dare.

Would the same apply to BT or Royal Mail if people were daring each other by phone or letter?

Pete

If BT supplied the connection for Facebook then YES, Royal Mail dont have an ISP so NO but the Post office does, so Yes.

Hello Mike, could you explain what that means, we don't understand your point, cheers Jerry

It does require an understanding of the natural world and how animals get to be (e.g.) "alpha male". Which leads to Darwinian selection and the survival of genes that are successful at excelling in pointless antler-growing and so forth...

Mike.

James - thank you for those comments. It was very traumatic to witness this happening as we only about 25m from the scene. To see the huge search effort - ambulances, divers, rescue boats, helicopter etc, to see the body being brought ashore and then to witness the anguish of the parents who by that time were at the scene. It will stay with me for a long time. I agree that the whole stunt was stupid but those who imply that the lad deserved it, then I have no time for them at all. I do have children and grandchildren and I can sympathise with the parents involved.

The internet has bought people into our homes that we would never let near our families before. Certainly not people whom my parents would ever have let near me or my siblings 40 years ago.

One has only to witness some of the bile, hate and intolerance that purports to be free speach and banter in our own 'lounge' to see how even people with a common interest can border on sociopathy.

As a society we are in a bad way.

Horrible; it has received a lot of media cover here.

Humanity? Sounds like you need a dose

I think you must have misunderstood. My comment was nothing to do with ISPs. Only traditional letters and telephone calls.
