I think these claims of small loads on the transom are erroneous...

Red Admiral's Navik suffered from this and ultimately failed at the mounting tubes.

The loads exerted by the wind vane itself are minimal but the power of the torsional loads from the pendulum oar are not to be underestimated...

Try manually overriding the tiller whilst the pendulum oar is attached to the tiller and you will understand the power of a servo pendulum!

The further away from the transom the wind vane is mounted and the greater the opportunity for flex, this twisting (torsion) action takes it's toll, not to mention the loads described by John of a following sea.
