I noticed a spraycan of EzeeStart rolling about in a boat I was recently exploring and, remembering another boat owners' addiction to the stuff for starting an elderly and neglected BMC Captain, I thought to ask a skilled and experienced diesel engineer with lotsa years' time in on boats' diesel lumps.

He wouldn't have EzeeStart on board, and prefers WD-40 if any 'artificial aid' is really warranted.

I'm wondering about the pros and contras. What about it, skilled diesel engineers of this parish...?
 
My "skilled marine engineer" (a mate) ripped me a new one when he spotted i had an ezee start can on board, then bought me a beer to apologise ...when i explained it was for the outboard on the tender ... ASS U ME...

Easy start can be used as an anaesthetic, if you want to undertake DIY surgery. May be a useful fact for Jesters....

WD40 in spray cans may contain propane. I prefer Duck Oil which is the same formula of water dispersant / rusted nut loosener, but as a plain oil you can squirt from a non-pressurised bottle.

I believe someone blew the deck off a yacht in Weymouth some years ago after the liberal use of EzeeStart or similar on a reluctant engine.

At last a good reason for having it aboard.

I've always carried it because someone , somewhere said it was a good idea for emergencies. On reflection, my experience of diesels suggests that you need it most before leaving the berth. Once the engine is warm, even after about 12 hours of non use, it's going to start anyway.

I used to own a diesel without glow plugs. It had a facility to inject more diesel until the engine fired. Would it not be better to spray diesel into the air intake rather than WD40 or Duck Oil ?

There are two reasons for not using easy start in diesel engines. Firstly is lack of lubrication but the main reason is that you have no control over when ignition occurs. With a petrol engine it occurs when the spark ignites it but with a diesel it will ignite when it gets hot enough.. This could be well in advance of normal and cause mechanical damage.

WD40 is mostly Naphtha, Hydroesulphurised Heavy .. same as white spirit. The propellant may be butane .. it was for a while but is now I think CO2


dont forget engines become addicted to Easy Start etc.............. Now watch the responses to that statement!

WD used a flammeable petroleum gas as a propellant so not as brutal as ether as used in ezee start. The issue with ezee start is that it goes bang instead of a controlled burn. It gives the same effect as pinking in a petrol engine and causes piston crowns to squash and trap rings or break them. Thats where the urban legend "engines get addicted" comes from. They dont get addicted, the pistons are damaged, lose compression and starting gets harder.

Some old diesels had a reservoir for ether as a starting system.. didn't seem to harm those crude jobbies

Im v old, worked repairing diesels all my life, never saw an ether reservoir!

If there is something wrong with your engine that only eezee will fix, it will fix it the next time. Eventually you'll have to find the fault which you should have fixed in the first place!
 
I fired up my 41 yr old motors for the first time since sept 2014, burst into life on the first twist of the key, They don't make e'm like that anymore.:encouragement:
