Popped down to Ipswich on the weekend as the forecast didnt look that great and i must say it was quite pleasant drifting back up the Orwell on a beautiful Sunday.
Stopped at Neptune Marina which is brilliant for the bars and shops etc, but £40 per night for my boat was a bit of a shock, I thought i had woken up on the south coast.

ouch

We paid 35 for a 37ft in Neptunes!!
They were v helpful..... but still a bit steep!!

Sadly I can't say the same for Fox's............ soooooooooooooooooo UNHELPFUL!! They can poke it!!!

Hiya,

This is our 1 and only encounter with Fox's, and sadly it will defo be the last!
We pre-booked a berth a week in advance for one night on our maiden voyage!!!
We get close to Fox's and call them up on the radio... or rather that is what we tried to do!! After an HOUR of calling, with no reply we give up and have lunch whilst hanging on anchor (we were thinking the harbour master must be doing his rounds dock side). After lunch, we tried calling them up again... still no reply. So we tried calling them on the phone, got an answer phone (which promises to get back to you), so we left a message (needless to say they never got back to us!!).
So we try once more on the VHF - we got a reply (but not from Fox's!!). It was from someone who did not name them selves, but said "give up on Fox's mate, they are so far up their own arse, they will never reply! he then went on to say go into Neptunes, you will get a warm welcome from the lock keeper AND the marina"!!
You know what - he was right!! the lock keep at Neptunes is great!! (v funny!!) and the staff at Neptunes even sorted us out an easy berth to get in to.

So........... when we got back home I emailed Fox's - NO reply!!! After 10 days I then callled them, someone was going to call me back! well after 7 months I'm still waiting!!

Unreliable time wasters! it's not what you want on your maiden voyage!

Regards

Its a working Hbr ( they have other duties ) you should have just come in & looked for a green disc in a berth. this indicates the berth holder is away & wont be back that day.A red dont berth here ;).
we have reasonable facilities + good food & drinks in FMYC where visitors are welcome.
there are a few forumites here as well :rolleyes:

Foxs

It's just a shame that their customer service is so so poor!
We of course understand that they have other things to do... but other Marina's cope.
Even Calias marina replied to us!! (I was shocked at that one!!).

It would of course be FAB to meet other forumites :)

I think you're being rather harsh - their only crime seems to be that they didn't answer your call on VHF. Nothing/no-one stopped you from venturing in, parking the boat somewhere, and getting hold of the staff.

We were at Fox's last WE, and both JJ & Ben couldn't have been friendlier or more helpful.

You need to remember, that unlike most marinas, Fox's is a boatyard first and foremost. The marina is only an afterthought.
If you're after dedicated marina service you're better off looking elsewhere, but to label Fox's marina staff as time-wasters, etc... seems to be OTT (to me).

Crikey!

I wonder how much the Haven is in comparison?

Its only a 2 minutes further walk!

Its a bit more than 2 mins away, but i know what you mean, it is certainly not worth the convenience of falling out of Isaacs and onto your boat. I was at the haven last year and i cant remember what it costs, so therefore it must have been unremarkable or reasonable, i doubt i will forget neptunes charges in any hurry, in fact on Monday morning i thought that i had been charged for the weekend ie 2 nights so i phoned them to check the rates hoping to remonstrate etc, but she just confirmed the £40!! perhaps I should have checked first?

The service from the HM's office may be poor but the timewasting seems to be yours; unless there's a VTS in force, why not just go in and tie up? Particularly when prebooked.
Bit harsh when its someone who is inexperienced, and may not be completely comfortable with the etiquette...

IMHO, if a marina accepts visitors, it really ought to have a listening watch on Ch80, even if its just a yard guy with a handheld...

Saying that, i've not had any dealings with the marina side of Foxes, but my contact with their retail, brokerage and rigging sections have been nothing but positive.

poor service

Just reading through all these posts & getting wound up. there is NO excuse for poor & bad service, i guess the original poster may not have known what to do. Foxes advertises as a MARINA, there is no excuse why SOMEONE could not be botherd to answer a VHF call or phone. IF they dont want visitors they should put up a notice saying so. We have also had marinas not bothering to reply so stuff them we go elswhere. BRIGHTLING SEA is a working harbour & all staff a great you will always get a reply on vhf 'working hours of course' & be seen into a berth with help. rant over now wait for 'backlash'

Ian i agree....
we went into Fox's earlier this year and must say they are not at all organised for visitors. very nice people when you can find anyone, we wanted to leave and could not find anyone to pay, this was about 3.30 even went to the shop 3 times and they couldnt find anyone.
so we ended staying the next day and it took ages to find anyone and in the end the guy didnt know anthing about costs so that took another hour...
then another guy tried to help but couldnt work the credit out so back to the shop then that guy vanished... in a nut shell we were just passed from piller to post no one taking responsability.
cant be hard to have one dedecated person with a hand held or mobile phone!
maybe we got a busy few days and people off sick or holidays...

on the plus side...
nice people,
harbour office always open so just go in yourself and re set wifi...lol 3 times
stayed there a few nights and very cheap
ok club house when its open and nice food

down side
lack of knowledgable staff ( but friendly)
miles from anywhere
very busy working yard
no calls answered
not at all pritty

we would visit again but would not recommend it to anyone
