Eye Splices in Braided Rope

I remember seeing a diagram somewhere showing how to make eye splices in braided rope. It required something like a 15" long "needle" and, I think, meant tapering the inner core of the rope. Has anyone got a copy of the diagram or could otherwise help?

I managed it after lots of practice, but if you just want one or two then get a rigger to do it. In fact watch a rigger at least once anyway, its very educational!

The only other comment I would have is buy a good set of stainless steel fids but not the "open" type. Go for the hollow "needle" type.

I don't know why, but when I try to recall 'Samson Ropes' it always comes out as 'Nelson'. If it's a Freudian slip, then that would imply one of two things: either delusions of grandeur or a previous incarnation. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Seriously though, the diagrams on that site are very clear and, once you get down to it with a piece of rope in your hands, are relatively easy to follow if one has the slightest inclination towards the art of knots and splicing.

If I can chip in, do you know anyone who supplies these hollow fids individually? I have two small ones for dinghy sized ropes, and I wouldn't mind getting a couple of larger ones - but I don't need a whole set. I prefer using these for three-strand instead of a swedish fid.

The cost of two larger ones is the same price as the whole kit and caboodle - I bought the whole kitt and blow me down I can now do jobs I never even dreamed of - like making Husky sled racing harnesses - 18 splices a set of traces!!

Rather you than me doing 18 splices. I have a kit and have done a few but I find it incredibly hard work working the fid and the rope inside the cover.
