I have a mushroom vent type thingy above the galley and I am considering fitting a small 12V computer type fan at deckhead level to aid with fume/steam extraction. Maximum aperture dimension is 95mm. Bearing in mind that the fan will be pulling potentially moist air through it is there any particular type of computer fan that will deal with this better than others?

Any sourcing information would also be appreciated.

Thanks to all as usual.

Force 4 sell a purpose made extractor fan for this purpose, our boat has one in both the heads and the galley.

They're good bits of kit, and although noisier than a computer fan are also more effective. Only pulls 0.1 amp too, surprisingly low. On offer at the moment!

£100 ????? I fitted a computer fan over the galley for under £10 several years ago and still working fine .

Thanks for those thoughts, guys. A bog standard 12VPC computer type fan is going for around a fiver at the mo so can't justify 20 of those for a purpose built 'marine' extractor.

Keep your thoughts coming though, all are appreciated.

As it's 98mm diameter, it might need a big hammer to get it into your 95mm hole , but one option is a 12V shower fan such as this one from Manrose .

At £12.49, it's a lot cheaper than the one from Force 4.
•Wattage: single phase 14W.
•12V ~ AC. 50Hz. Supplied by a remote safety isolating transformer (Manrose T12 Series), purchased separately.
Not a lot of use for running on a 12VDC system though I guess you could run it via an invertor taking your 12v DC to 240VAC then back through the ''Manrose isolating trransfoprmer'' back to 12V but this time AC.

Still stuggling to beat a fiver though. At that price I can buy two or three and still be quids in! I was just wondering if any of the 'cheap' ones were better suited to more 'moist' air.

Keep 'em coming.

After a few years od our galley edxtraction, we found we were getting some 'nasty' gaqlley smeels coming into the boat when the wind was in a specific direction relative to the boat.

We traced it to the wind blowing through the vent. Taking out the fan, we found the tubing lined with dirty fatty deposits which were horrid and stank. Cleaned it as far as we could but to no avail. Just can't reach around the bends. So, we now stuff a small rag into the vent when not cooking. Problem solved!

That could be overcome using a 555 timer oscillator and a couple of transistors. DC in AC out.
