Happy bank holiday Monday everyone!
Please could anyone recommend the best extra long shaft outboard engine, say between 6hp to 10hp? For a 26 foot sailing boat. I think Tohatsu do a regular/long/extra long option. Any others? Advice and recommendations greatly appreciated. Thanks!

TheTohatsu 9.9with ultra long (25") leg is used by many cat owners and it has a very high reputation for thrust and relaibility. Best with a 4 blade prop for a displacement boat.

We had a Yamaha 9.9 high thrust with extra long shaft, on our Comanche catamaran.

A lovely engine: totally reliable, beautifully smooth and quiet, economical, plenty of torque.

We have a Yamaha 9.9 Long Shaft which we are pleased with. Starts and runs reliably and available in an extra long shaft version which maybe we should have bought. The disadvantage of it is that it does not have a fitted pull cord which the Tohatsu does have I believe.

We went for the Yam because I thought (Maybe wrongly as I could have maybe lowered the mounting bracket) that there was not enough height under the locker cover that the outboard is situated in permanently.

There are only 2 mainstream extra long shaft 10 hp engines now - Tohatsu & Honda. There's also a Selva but I've never seen one. Yamaha used to but no more. I replaced my worn out Yamaha with a Tohatsu as I vowed never to buy anything Honda again after my experience with the 2.3. Everything fine after 3 years although I don't think the prop design is as good as the Yamaha's because it seems to get fouled with that stringy spaghetti-like seaweed frequently.

Please excuse a bit of thread drift, but i have a relevant question.
I also have a 26 ft yacht which has a long shaft 15 HP honda 4 stroke. It is heavy and getting on in years but is reliable mostly and not too noisy.
Just because it is getting old, I am thinking of replacing it perhaps with a 2 stroke Tohatsu.
My Honda burns 2 litres/hour at 6.5 knots which i reckon is pretty good. What could i expect from a 2 stroke Tohatsu under similar circs?
(I am concerned less about the cost of fuel and more about how much i need to carry on a multi-day cruise.)
Thanks
