Exterior woodwork oil or varnish?

My little dinghy is mahogany on oak and I've started a regime of varnish. Looks great and I dry sail so it doesn't weather too much. We'll see how it goes.

I am using a mixture of Stockholm tar, Boiled linseed oil, and paraffin, approx 25/35/40. Its a mixture used in the Baltic on the old wooden boats, works well on teak, brings out the grain and although slightly tacky at first ( may the mix was wrong) settles down and does the job.

I like that - any excuse to use Stockholm tar smells good to me.
But I think you have to accept it is a treatment with a distinct working boat flavour and colour. I love it, but it might well seem out of place on a sleek varnished gentleman's yacht.

Hi

Where are you getting the Stockholm tar, out of interest?

If you want the goop to go off quicker add a small amount of Japan Driers aka terebene-- any big pro paint supplier should have it, it's very cheap. Don't use too much, and add just prior to use. Oil-heavy varnish takes its time but Japan Driers can really help.
