Extending a length of chain

My chain is 8mm. I'm not good with " but appears similar to 3/8". If this would work, then I would be very grateful for it.

This is yet another small problem. The good links, Crosby, ACCO and a couple of others, are made for lifting and hoisting. The chain standard for this duty is not DIN766, so the links are not a perfect fit. They go through the gypsy perfectly well but sometimes they do not articulate perfectly and need a little relief with a file in the inside edge.

Who said boating is easy?! :D

Glad to hear it. Metric makes much more sense. I only used those quaint old fractions 'cos it's American.

Although I measured the wire gauge as 3/8" (9.5mm) I've just put some light on the subject and see that the link is actually marked as 5/16" which you'll be glad to learn is 8mm. If you PM me your address and be on your best behaviour between now and Xmas, you never know what might turn up in your stocking. Just leave a couple of mince pies out.

Yes, it ought to be pretty obvious how they work when you see one: http://coxengineering.sharepoint.com/Pages/Clinks.aspx

As rob2 wrote, the 'rivets' are not load-bearing but simply hold the two parts of the links together. Mind you, they will inevitably come in for lots of abuse so the peening should be sound.

PS Sorry brain in neutral. Don't use a ball hammer. That's not what it's for. Best to use a flat-faced hammer on a punch with a nice square head.

thanks very much macd

Anchor Chain Joining Links

Back in May I purchased some 8mm (5/16") and 10mm (3/8") equivalents, genuine Crosby links from our local agents. These were snapped up by Forum members and I have only one 10mm left which is intended for my own chain extension (when I buy the chain:)).

They are not cheap, but I can order any quantity, and the postage from here (to UK) is about £1-2. Delivery time to me is about 2 weeks.
I will only sell at actual cost + postage (to Forum Members).

If anyone is interested PM me and I will get current prices, and subject to sufficient interest I will order some more.

Michael.

Extending anchor chain

I have enquiries for 15 links from 10 people, Therefore I will be ordering them next Wednesday (cannot do it before), so if there is anyone else interested they will need to contact me by Wednesday morning (5th.) latest.

Cheers,

Michael.

Crosby links

I added an extra 20mtrs of chain onto my existing 50 mtrs of 8mm chain. I know that it's better not to join chain but the extra 20mtrs is better joined by a Crosby link on my boat, than sitting in my garage. You do need to make sure that the link moves easily around the existing links. I had to gently file the inside of the Crosby link. A quick spray with cold galvanise and all is well.
