Have a new problem that has me puzzled.

Twin filters on a Ford Dorset 2712e. September full service incl new filters and added acoustic insulation to engine box.

First occurrence, run up to temp then anchored for approx 30min then heard first bowl break. First SeaStart call out. Figured had over tightened assembly on a very old bowl. Replaced with new bowl.

Approx 8 hrs of motoring (30 min max motoring to fishing spots) and have second ocurrence, new glass bowl breaks. Second SeaStart call out. Discussed with engineer and concluded that with the box now insulated shut down temp spike is creating enough heat to stress the bowl. Replaced with aluminium bowl.

Three more trips of approx 30-45 min, and on shutdown have opened engine box to vent, planning on installing a blower. No problems.

Today, two runs/shutdowns no problem. Third shutdown, vented box, after 15 min closed and fished. At some stage the second filter in line glass bowl broke. Could not face calling SeaStart again for the same issue, so bypassed filters to get home.

Nothing is contacting with the bowls. Eng temp running as pre insulation.

Anyone got any advice on this? Got me completely baffled.

I could relocate filtration to outside the engine box, not without its challenges, but I'd rather figure out what is going on and solve.

Dunno. Peculiar.

Why is there glass bowls in the engine box?

Usually on old Fords there's a glass bowl on the pre filter. Then just the metal bottom cup on the twin filters on the engine. Isn't it?

That's the way it came. 50 hours of running with no issues, then acoustic insulation on the engine box and problems start. Figured opening the box for 10-15 min after shutdown would solve, but apparently not.

Hi There,
not too sure on your engine, but a friend of mine used to run older 1950s and 1960s trucks and mentioned sometimes vibrations Could crack the glass fuel Filter bowls. Any chance this is vibration?

Had this happen to me on a Ford Transit when i was working as a AA patrol on the motor way had to get another AA patrol to tow me to garage how embarrassing .

I wouldn't have thought so, have installed new engine mounts, old ones were near solid (still plenty of vibration though. In any case, I would have thought the break would happen when engine running, this happens well after engine shut down.

At least you could have walked home! AA rescuing AA, nice! I was too embarrassed to call Sea Start for the third time...

You seem to have answered your own question. Your problems didn’t start until you added the extra insulation. Remove it and see what happens

Further to my reply with the AA towing the AA the starter motor failed on the land rover the RAC patrol who i knew was having a break he gave me a tow start, i was so scared some one was going see me .these days someone with a mobile phone would have seen me.We all sailed close to the wind in them days.
