Exploding diesel engine

Boat engines can always be put in gear, the prop will provide sufficient load to prevent overrunning. Just put it in gear, do not give it full throttle. Then the engine is not running on its usual fuel and will not develop a lot of power. This should give you the time to think of alternative ways of stopping and prevent damage.

did you see the video in #27 :D

I experienced just the same three years ago. The engine is a perk 4108 and it was the high pressure pump that caused it. It required a seriously qualified shop to open it, replace parts and back in place, a job that put me off something like 500 if I remember well.
The engineer showed me a part which had quite a lot play. If this part was allowed to move say by a mm then we had a runaway. Tolerances in this unit are very small.
To me the fact that yours finally started, points to the high pressure pump.

Surprising how many have come out of the woodwork and enlightened us on this problem.
Obviously overfilling the sump, ruptured liftpump diaphragms, and worn high pressure pumps are to be avoided if possible, but the common "stopper" is still the oxygen supply. I'm going to keep a thick polythene bag near the air intake of my 4108. It will be used to smother the engine should it misbehave in this way.
Incidently, the only time I had heard of this before was due to a leaking can of eze-start in a drawer over the engine bay.
