Experience required for sunsail bvi s charter

A few people have suggested Mooring as an alternative. The sad news is that Sunsail now own Moorings as well!!

All part of the First choice holiday company I think

I agree this looks like a case of trying to make you pay for one of their training courses. Devon Sailing in Dartmouth have lost our custom because they used to accept Coastal Skipper for chartering but now they only accept full Yachtmaster or...get this... their own Coastal Skipper qualification. The wording is "For those of you with your RYA / MCA Yachtmaster Certificate or RYA/MCA Coastal Skipper Certificate with DEVON Sailing / NONSTOP Sail"

What a cheek!

My experience was with TMM not Sunsail, but as you have already paid or at least done the deal with Sunsail I would negotiate very hard on the weekend skippered charter, let them know its public on this forum at the very least. Good luck!

Sunsail/Moorings (same company) rate BVI as 'intermediate'. In other words, there's a reasonable amount of wind to deal with.

In 'intermediate' areas they require you to have been in charge of a yacht before, for instance, on a previous flotilla.

This they would regard as probable proof that you knew how to use winches properly to trim sails in F4 or F5 winds, and that you knew how to raise and lower sails, and reef them. in similar winds.

At a guess, from your list of certificates and experiences, they would guess these skills were missing. If I wanted to double check, I'd ask you to explain to me how you would free a riding turn on a taut jib sheet, and also I'd ask you exactly what manouevures and processes you would use to take in a reef when you were sailing towards a down-wind destination.

Your answers (and their fluency) would quickly tell me whether or not I'd have to consider sail repair part of my costs!
