I recently, in my sublime ignorance, ordered an new tachometer cable for my Alibin (Ailsa Craig) AD2 engine. When I asked the price the supplier asked if I was sitting down and told me that they would have to order one from Sweden and it would cost me £156.00!!

I know that keeping old wooden boats is an expensive business but I hope that someone can tell me how to get my tacho working at less than a tenth of the price quoted!

Hi

There are a few standards in flexible drives for tachos a firm like Richfield or I am sure many other firms can remake such a cable . perhaps a good idea is to call a car restorer in your neighbourhood for the nearest firm adres. don' throw the old cable away, sometimes special couplings were used, before you have a new one.

regards ,
Werner

1) do you realy need a tacho?

2) you can rig up an alternative for GBP15 if you don't mind a digital display. Buy a 15 pound bicycle computer which has a small digital display and a magnet and sensor that you mount at the engine. The computer has a calibration function that allows you to get a RPM readout.

3) if you definately want to get your old tacho working I guess you will have to buy the new cable.

No. there is a tiny magnet that you screw or bond to the rortating part (the spoke of a wheel on a bicycle) and a sensor that you mount a few mm away from it on a fixed part. The cheap ones have a wire between the sensor and the readout head and the more expensive ones have a "wire-less" radio connection.

Sit down? I always lie down before I get a quote for spares for my Albin 011!
Two suppliers in the UK are: Stanton Marine, 8 Danehurst New Road, Tiptoe, Lymington. SO41 6FW. Tel. 01590 681848
Also: Vega Spares, 8 Cockshot Road, Malvern, WR14 2TT. Tel. 01684 568676
Alternatively E-mail Sweden : info@albinmotor.com
or www.forsmarin(.com?)
Bets of luck.

Thanks for that Nick; I live near the people in Lymington so get most of my spares from them but another supplier is always welcome.

The boat did not have a tacho cable when I bought it so no pattern for an alternative - yet!
