For some years now a number of forumites have been making a pilgrimage across to Oostende over the weekend of the end of May Bank Holiday, meeting up for a bit of a drink, and then coming home again....
We've been trying to increase the participation, with last year 10 boats making it, albeit with the extremely windy weather, not all at the same time!
We are hoping that this year, we can get even more boatd along....
Its good fun, all sorts of boats attending from new 40' AWBs to somewhat older low 20' MABs.... we end up sharing a drink or two, perhaps a restaurant if enough people are interested, and generally just enjoy a bit of socialising....
The more the merrier, so join in!
I think we have about 8 boats confirmed already this year.... spread the word... all welcome.... forumites or otherwise...
i have quickly scanned your blogs and will read fully later today. Looks exciting. I have had a Wing 25 on the Orwell, now Deben for 2 seasons, i am planning to replace her in the autumn with something a little bigger to go a little further. I would be interested in trying just this sort of trip next year but i've never crossed the channel so it would be a great help to me to be in company.
I take it this is a bring your own brain operation - i.e. not an organised thing, more friendly encouragment.

Pretty much.
Different start off points, different boats, different diary...
And let's not forget the weather (major player last year): one man's "sporting breeze" is another man's "gale".
Last year about 10 boats made it - over 4-5 days. This year it would be nice if more turned up at the same time. 26-27 MAY!
Definitely not around that week. Am starting my crossing the channel plans with a skippered trip on Annabel J, a replica bristol pilot cutter - christmas present from my wife. Lucky me!
Fingers crossed to try next year.
N°2 may seem handsome, but the light's doing him a lot of favours here.
And though handsome, shame had he did not last the course. IIRC he had to seek refuge in white beer after Duvel N°9 /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif
A drunk is driving through the city and his car is weaving violently all over the road. A cop pulls him over and asks, “Where have you been?”
“I've been to the pub,” slurs the drunk.
“Well,” says the cop, “it looks like you've had quite a few.”
“I did alright,” the drunk says with a smile.
“Did you know,” says the cop, standing straight and folding his arms, “that a few intersections back, your wife fell out of your car?”
“Oh, thank heavens,” sighs the drunk. “For a minute there, I thought I'd gone deaf.”
read the blogs. Good stuff.
Ostende is a better choice than zeebrugge, i guess. Is there minimal commercial traffic?
MagnaC From the Oost Dyck W (in your blog account) you got into a shallower water out of commercial way and followed coast past nieuwport or went via middlekerkebank/ oostendbank w bouys?
opinions requested from the more experienced of you on this trip ,, as some know I've got hold of a little Debutante 21 footer , not intending to do it on my own ( before anyone thinks I'm that daft ) but would she be likely to be suitable for this sort of trip , or just local
we sail straight in from the West Hinder never any probs with depth, why " go walk-about".
the main thing is to arrive "up-tide" tha last thing you want is a foul tide & beating into it, thats just silly when / if the crew is tired
Follow Sailorman's advice - usually pretty sound.
Don't over-navigate - it's just a channel x-ing, not a YM exam.
From Harwich I've got 3 waypoints: Sunk, Westhinder and Ostend.
Just keep an eye out for Ferryways on the Ipswich-Ostend run to confirm you're still on track /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Only commercial traffic in/out Ostend are the ferries: TEF (Ostend-Ramsgate) and Ferryways (Ostend-Ipswich). Do NOT jump the traffic lights at harbour entrance - hefty fine!

According to your crew you sleep most of the time /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif
Guess that's why he's tired /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif
