Exhaust Silencer?

I've just bought an Elizabethan 31 fitted with a Sabb 2h 18hp engine. Mechanically the engine is in good condition however it sounds very noisy from the exhaust, I've looked along the system and it's basically straight through without a Vetus (thingy), I've looked on the web and it would appear that silencers are available, has anyone fitted one and if so and tips regarding what and where to buy from would be greatly appreciated.

Rather than a silencer/muffler, get a water trap, as it will act as a silencer, and be a reservoir for the cooling water when the engine is stopped.

If there is absolutely no way that water can run back into the engine, then a muffler will help without adding too much back-pressure.
I fitted one from here last year for the same reason as you.

If there is ANY chance of water coming back to the engine, you need a trap.

The water trap made a huge difference to the noise made by my old Yanmar.

I fitted both a watertrap and a muffler + a gooseneck on the transom - all Vetus - when I re-engined and from outside you barely hear the exhaust. You can often get all these from ebay at a cheaper cost than your local chandlery.

How much difference did the muffler make to the noise level compared with just a water trap?

I also have both water trap and muffler and at tickover its the tappet noise that lets you know the engine's running. Cruising up the river its the vibration and water splashing from the exhaust that tell you the revs.

Don't know how much to atribute to the muffler as they were both on when I bought the boat. Previous installations suggest that the raw bark is muted by the water trap alone - particularly handy as it performs two functions: preventing water backflowing in to the engine and silencing.

Fit all three gadgets (water trap, muffler and gooseneck) from Vetus, it's worth it for the noise reduction alone and you're less likely to have future issues. If you're in any doubt, when you're next out motoring into harbour or whatever, just consider what you'd feel like if the engine conked out.

Swan neck and water trap are the essential components. Also fit the muffler if the exhaust noise is still too high.
Rubber hose is a pretty good silencer on its own!

The Westerly I sailed had just hose running at bilge level rising to an "Elastomuffle" in the stern locker and then falling to the outlet in the transom

When the Elastomuffle blew apart at the seams we initially replaced it with a straight piece of hose with no obvious increase in noise level.

We subsequently fitted a water trap up close to the engine.
