exhaust riser heat wrap material & tips?

It might be a bit pricey, but I would advise going with a custom heat blanket rather than the fibrglass wrap. We have a dry exhaust section on our boat and it's horrible each time we go past it, and that's with new wrap on. But it is cheap & effective so if in an area that doesn't see a lot of traffic then will be fine.

One thing that concerns me is that you had water in the bilge when the exhaust pipe failed. This is worrying as the water injection is after the failure point, so should not have been able to run back down the exhaust pipe into the bilge. I may be misunderstood (and apologise if so) as the water could have got in because the exhaust pipe filled up, but there should be a spray head in the outlet to ensure water only runs one way and to spread the stream of water around the pipe evenly to prevent hot spots. If you do not have this, then the exhaust needs to be modified urgently as the engine is at high risk of back-filling.

no traffic where this exhaust lives it's port side of the e/r out of line of normal checks.

it's definitely safe, just what happened is slightly confusing and didn't bother explaining it properly:
so as in the pic, exhaust broke, flange and first bend remained secured on the cyl head.
rest of exhaust with silicone seawater hose securely attached to it fell 100mm lower and stopped there hanging by the exhaust hose. As a result all seawater passing through the heat exchanger, ended up in the broken piece of the exhaust elbow whose broken end was lower than the outlet, as a result water was going back to the bilges rather than the silencer and hull outlet.
Hope it clarifies the issue.

cheers

Thanks, all clear now & glad all is OK. Good luck with the mend. In this location, fiberglass wrap would be OK. Wear double latex gloves to fit as it gets bl**dy itchy (don't ask how I know ?)
