Exhaust Port

Hi,the exhaust port on our clinker seems to sit half in the water,is this normal or are we heading for trouble.
This is our first boat so we could just be over cautious,she starts first time and is not taking on water.Any advise would be great,many thanks

I am pretty sure this is a normal configuration. I assume your engine/exhaust is water-cooled. In normal operation, cooling water squirts out the exhaust. Having the outlet semi-submerged helps keep it quiet.

It helps keep things quiet, but make sure a water lock is fitted in the exhaust - usually a plastic box with one pipe coming off it at 45 degrees, set at the lowest point of the system. Waves coming against the back of the boat can push water up the exhaust pipe and in to the engine doing terminal damage to it. The exhaust should laso have a 'swan neck' loop taking it as high as possible under the aft deck, also to stop ingress of water. There may be an anti syphon valve fitted at the top of the loop.

One or the other, or both is definitely needed.
