bit of a drama today when we discovered a split in the exhaust hose below the waterline. Managed to get a plug into outlet and then get an extension hose clamped onto the back of the outlet out of the water so all good. Been on the french canals for 6 months and the hose has chaffed against the hole in the bulkhead between the aft cabin and the engine bay. Questions. is it best to replace all 4m of the exhaust hose or could i simply put a bit of stainless in and make a join.(sorry if this is stupid but I just do not know) I am in France so does anybody know any french suppliers. My internet trawl has been fruitless. have got best price from ASAP 75mm with great delivery charge but price makes me not sure about the quality so if anybody can suggest alternative suppliers I would appreciate it. also is corrugated better than smoothe, whats the difference? Cannot afford silicon by the way. basically appreciate any advice on replacing the hose. Thanks in advance as ever.

Don't know what the ASAP hose is like, but I have used both Vetus and Halyard Marine. New types are very flexible and much easier to handle than the old stiff wire reinforced ones. Replace the whole lot while you are at it - and make sure the new one does not chafe!

If you can get a good stainless joining section with flared ends, I would be happy to just replace the damaged bit.
It's the bit that get the worst heat and vibration.
Sometimes you can usefully put in an extra Vetus muffler as a joiner?
As Tranona says, sort the chafing for next time.

If your exhaust outlet is under water I'd have thought it would make sense to put in a swan's neck just before the outlet. Either create it from exhaust hose or insert a ready made one.

The exhaust on my boat is mainly stainless steel tube with short sections of hose to provide flexibility for engine vibration.

I would replace the section of exhaust that has chafed as it goes through the bulkhead with a section of stainless steel so that chafing cannot happen again. I would also consider fixing the stainless section to the bulkhead to seal the engine room from the rest of the boat.
