Exhaust elbow any way to prevent corrosion?

The exhaust elbow is there to cool the exhaust gases and the elbow before it reaches the rubber hose and the plastic mufflers. To do it effectively the cooling water must be spayed onto a plate where it can form droplets to fill the elbow and hence cool the gases quickly. If you just inject the water straight into the pipe the gases may be too hot for the hose.

That must be why the Mermaid bend is as it is, the hose fits to the outside, water jacket section.

This is the arrangement on my motorsailer. Nothing at all clever about it but it works perfectly well and as far as I know it has done for many years.

Vyv .... surely there is a deflection plate in there to stop the cooling water getting back to the exhaust valves if the engine doesn't start? I suspect that the exhaust pipe entering the can and the water injection pipe are not finished flush .... i.e. intrude into the can.
