We're playing with the idea of staying in the UK this summer and taking the boat to the South West. Does anyone know what the air and water draft restrictions on the exeter canal are. Looking at some pics on google earth it looks like I shouldnt have much of an issue but some advice would always be useful before I start to buy charts etc...

Thanks in advance for any posts...

I get under the M5 bridge each year with a Westerly Pageant - with about 2-3ft to spare.
A guy a couple of years ago in front of me in a Heavenly Twins cat hit the bridge taking his masthead light off & then wedged, needing crew movement to get out.
There's manually operated crane at Turf which with pre-arrangement withy the Canal office guys can lower your mast.
Or you could stay at Turf in the canal just inside the lock. In the summer there are tourist ferries to Topsham and also up the canal. It's about 5 miles into Exeter.

As I dont fancy having my mast taken off, it looks like I'll be staying below the bridge. The luff on my main is 9.45m add to that the gear at the top of the mast and the 1.5m or so for the topsides etc and it wont happen. Thanks to who have contributed.

Ferry/water taxi sounds like the best bet...

Is there a particular reason you want to go in the canal? If it's to get to Exeter you could find a temporary mooring on the Exmouth or Starcross side and get the sprinter train service into Exeter. It would be better than the hassle of using the canal. Unless of course there is a more specific requirement.

It's called The Everest Syndrome.

Not a very convincing argument when hard aground on a falling tide in a shallow creek!
