Exclusive! Landmark move shock hits Kent.
By our East Coast correspondent.
People throughout Kent are shocked by revelations of secret plans by the Lighthouse Authorities to relocate one of the region’s best-loved landmarks. North Foreland is an historic landmark and part of our maritime heritage.
But plans, accidentally leaked in a leaflet issued with the latest issue of the popular “Yachting Monthly” magazine, clearly reveal that the Lighthouse Authorities intend to move North Foreland some 40 miles north and relocate it in Harwich Harbour.
In the leaflet, advising yachtsmen about the accuracy of Differential GPS, the map of DGPS stations shows North Foreland in its new location in Harwich Harbour. Sources close to the Lighthouse Authorities suggest that this controversial move is only a small part of the Marine Navigation Plan (MNP) which is “designed to meet the changing requirements of all classes of mariner”.
The Home Office is believed to be prepared to deny suggestions that relocating North Foreland is part of an EU initiative to encourage illegal immigrants arriving by yacht to target Essex rather than Kent.
Meanwhile, Essex County Council may offer a reciprocal arrangement in which the Naze Tower is moved to Kent. It is understood that a previous offer, in which the whole of Walton-on-the-Naze would be relocated to Kent, was declined.
