Sounds to me like you've achieved the desired outcome.... you can bet that next time it's foggy, they'll have your report in the back of their mind!

I hope so

I probably ought to add though that as we analysed the available data, and despite the operators denial that the visibiluty was poor that day, it became clear that the RV Audrey had reduced speed from her normal service speed. She would normally be trogging about at well over 20kts and she'd cut that down to around half speed.

However, as I mentioned earlier the two fast cats working the wind farm were plodding about at about 6 knots (or about 1/4 service speed)

Another thought I forgot to add earlier - if you're reporting stuff like this to either CHIRP or the MCA, pin down exact locations with Lat Long coordinates (and perhaps even attach chart plots or Rogers suggestion of plotter screenshots) because there was some significant confusion between myself, CHIRP and the operator over where the incident occurred despite my having given what I had foolishly assumed would be a clear location based on a descriptive text

My third conclusion is that I can't help feeling that a certain amount of complacency might start to creep in around the operations of these work boats. After all, they're out and back several times a day over the same short stretch of water and I suspect it becomes a bit like driving a bus. Hopefully, this will have rattled their cage enough to make them take more care in future (for I have no druthers about saying that IMO they were not navigating safely that morning)

It has been an interesting learning experience although I don't intend to make a habit of it! However, if I encountered the same circumstances again I reckon I probably would

I have had for a long time an interest in both marine and railway accidents, and complacency is the single thing that comes out across the board...

Bit of thread drift. But I have a SH 2100 (I think) with the fog horn function and a SH loudhailer mounted on the wheelhouse roof. I tried it out on my son who was sailing a good distance ahead and he reported on the VHF that it was clearly audible. only nagging doubt, that may well be unjustified, is that it seems a bit directional. Might well be less so at a distance though.

Fun to play with, with lots of signals, sirens and other sounds, as well as a loudhailer and listen back feature.

I am now banned from using it in our home berth. Can't imagine why.
