Curious as to what the panel thinks

Feeling our way into the Colne this morning with a good deal less than two cables vis in fog we encountered the RRV Audrey (42' cat workboat)

Well I say encountered but in fact we never actually saw her as she rocketed out of the Colne doing 18.2 knots (according to AIS) past Mersea Stone

We heard her engines and felt her wash though

OK, I know she'll have a good radar system but is that enough to justify going that fast in such poor vis?

No, there might be someone fishing from a small boat. Chapter 1, Page 1 of the radar book says you likely won't see him on radar.
So the workboat was out of order. Full stop, end of.

Good man, after the Condor incident maybe it will get some attention?

Some years ago in Scotland I was on a yacht travelling down the East coast of Mull in thick fog vis perhaps 50 - 100 meters, on our radar we picked up a target astern which was overtaking at around 20Kts! When it came by about 20 meters on our port side it turned out to be a large RIB with 3 crew, no radar that we could see. How they could justify travelling at that speed in very poor visibility I do not know.

This got discussed after the Condor incident, but attention was distracted by the clear negligence of the bridge crew who were simply not doing their jobs.Far more satisfying to read about their sexual prowess or other habits than think about the basic issue of how fast is safe in fog. There are some professional mariners who say modern technology is good enough to allow full speed through the channel shipping lanes in any visibility or none.Im not convinced.

The ones I have read have reported what the 'other' side have said about the matter - if they have responded and normally the editors give a comment. It's not a MAIB assessment but it brings it to the attention of the company usually - which might be useful.

I copied & pasted your exact words

I could have done that myself, but I was hoping for a more specific and relevant answer.

On the plus side however, I could sense that today your ego and feelings of self-worth were flagging, so I invited you to post a pompous and self-righteous reply so that you could bolster your low self-esteem!

You're welcome! :)

No need for that, your post satisfies those criteria.

Are you really so lazy that you have to ask such a question?

Although I know the answer, I thought it was a reasonable question, since the nature of the report is self-evidently not universally known. It doesn't come up on a simple google search, but you can find it on chirp.co.uk.
