I have just bought a whole lot of assorted items from Boat Ropes. I had already bought some last year to see the quality, and it is good. The Yacht Braid halyards are good with very little stretch, far less stretchy than another leading brand I had bought before and was going to replace with Dyneema to cut out the stretch.

Typical price of 12.7 mm is £1.35 per meter: 35 meters = £48.60. Jimmy Greens price for 12 mm is £86.00.

Service is top quality too, my quote came back within minutes. Barry Edwards is also very happy to talk to you if you have any queries.

Shop Telephone: 01606 888154 (8am-7pm, outside these hours please email us on boatropes@barryedwards.co.uk )

I agree. I have been buying all my ropes from Barry for several years. Excellent quality and price. He lives fairly close to me so I go to meet him and collect my purchases. Very pleasant and knowledgeable chap.

Great link Chris, thanks

doublebraid for anchoring?

I followed this link with interest as I'm in the market for a new anchor warp. I was surprised to see that the rope he offers for anchor lines is doublebraid nylon. I thought this was for sheets and halyards, previously I've only seen 3 strand or 8 plait used for anchoring. Has anyone actually used doublebraid for anchoring? Is it compatible with rope/chain gypsies? Anyone enlighten me?

Thanks for the link as i'm in the market to replace all the running rigging on my gk24, The only problem now is sorting out sizes and my colour scheme.

Many Thanks
Rob

I've certainly never used it and never seen anyone use it. It seems to have the wrong characteristics for an anchor warp. My preference would be octoplait first choice, three strand second (after chain obviously:)).

I bought 50 mtrs of Anchor Plat Nylon last year from Barry, so he must have it. Give him a call and talk it through, don't place orders through the very confusing Ebay system! I have seen it used, and it was ok, and it may be that it runs through a gypsea better - ask him.

Just to add my vote to the mix.

Last night I received the mooring lines I had purchased from Barry who was a pleasure to deal with. Not only was he happy to give advice before ordering but the prices are spot on and the delivery was sensibly priced and fast.

On top of all that, he rang back when he said he would and replied to my emails within minutes, something almost unheard of in the marine environment.

He has gained a customer for life.

No connection, just very happy and satisfied with my purchases.

Colours have been mentioned - is there any accepted practice for choice of colour? I'm thinking 1st and second reef here and maybe topping lift and boom vang??

Selden use standard colours but personally I don't rate them as they are too similar, basically all main controls are white, genoa lines have a blue fleck, first reef heavier blue fleck, second red fleck, third yellow fleck. Topping lift and vang and mainsheet are plain white, main halyard has a very light blue/yellow fleck if Dyneema but plain white if rope tails on wire.
But I would choose my own colours for easier identification.

Hello, Barry of Boatropes here, my thoughts on colours because I ask customers what they need almost daily. No standard colour system to my knowledge, each skipper devises their own to suit their particular crew. No hard and fast logic mainly because most have inherited a system from a previous owner and only want to replace a line or two. Colours become more important though as more lines these days are led back to cockpit.

My own foible is to have an 8mm /blue as topping lift and an 11mm /blue as main halyard, a reminder to use both in the correct order. I prefer that to the sharp reminder of a boom knocking me senseless.....

My first ever (seasoned) skipper would never answer questions about rope colour - "if you're not watching the business end when you're pulling it you shouldn't be pulling it at all" was always his reply. Some sense in that, be wary of reliance on colour alone.

all ropes in stock again

A few running rigging items have been out of stock recently, apologies to the few members affected. (all your fault though for buying too much.......!) My supply chain is across the Atlantic on a 3 months cycle, so gaps sometimes do appear.

Sizes 6mm 8mm 10mm and Selma splicing tools are all now well stocked again, larger sizes arrive on Tuesday, including docklines, anchorlines, MOB floating line etc

An update on rope stock colours here. More colour choices now at every size - 6mm 8mm 10mm & 12.7mm (US 1/2") - in addition to my regular four fleck colours and solid white I have introduced solid blue and solid red. In total a choice of 7 colours for any application. Don't consult the crew though, they will ask what shade of blue..........
