River was quiet during first week on way up to our turn round point Goring . Bit tough finding moorings sometimes and lucky to get decent mooring spots, just arriving as a boat had departed both at both Henley and Goring.
Very few of the locks were officially manned most showing self service , lockies on site engaged in various watering and mowing operations but not assisting with passage.
At two locks the self service signs were up but lockie was helping to transit boats.
Was told on two occasions to get back on my boat when a lockeeper turned up in mid self service operation.
All locks proved simple to operate with the exception of the non standard one just below Henley but got the hang of it in the end.
99% of Thames boaters proved perfectly capable of operating and packing a lock ,both large and small.
99% of the time with good humour as well.
Stayed in Penton Hook and Harleyford Marinas.
Got a warm welcome in the Penton Hook boat club premises. :)
Lady Lyndsies now seems to be a party location for all the local chavs including it would appear quite few middle aged ones . The amount of litter they left behind was ..................
Last stop was Hampton Court and true to form we squeezed inbetween a solar powered barge and a little sports cruiser, with no battery capability, judging by the length of time he kept his engines runnning during the day. :(
Never ever seen the river so busy with boats of all shapes and sizes going up and down all day.
Exited Teddington about 10.00, went through Richmond lock around 11.00 and arrived back at Rochester at 19.30.
Big suprise..... the sheer numbers of swimmers enjoying the river along with how popular those stand up paddleboards have become.
An excellent adventure.

Two observations. One serious :(
Most of the proper little narrow boats seemed to be be keeping to the mooring etiquette of the river ie. spending 24 hours at a mooring and then moving on..
The main culprits of all the congestion at moorings and noise were those with the larger widebeam barge type modern purpose built boats. The ones at Shepperton had obviously been there weeks and had carefully left dingies and canoes strategically placed, to prevent other boats getting in between them.
Another observation. :).
The sheer numbers of ginourmouse shiney gleaming Sealines hiding up there on the upper bits of the Thames , probably the best place for them ?

Disappointed you only got as far as Goring, Fred. At least you made Ashmount many moons ago. And to think Oxford was waiting for you after your threats of going there! :)

Fred - did you pay at HC? I assume you moored on the wharf in front of the 'side' gates?
(Not looking to avoid paying if I have to but the parking Co: seems to be a bit of a mess...

Somebody very helpfully pointed out we could have stayed on the PH club moorings AFTER we had paid MDL.
Mind you the MDL fee of £27.00 including water and rather a lot of electricity was not too onerous.
MDL Chatham charged me the thick end of £40 for the same privilege during a winter visit last Xmas.

Just registered my arrival with the "wheretomoor" website and got my free 24 hours.
Chap wandered down about mid day taking photos of boats on the moorings. Certainly ensures nobody outstays their welcome.
Moored at Runnymeade, loads of space, lots of empty posts but no signs warning about registering to moor, all removed ?
Got nice takaway from the "Italian."

HC - thanks happy to work with the system, but the firm has a dodgy reputation and the extent of the moorings is not defined - we tend to moor a bit further downstream

Runnymende is National Trust property and I suppose the moorings are monitored by volunteers. They used to be very noisy when there was a 60 speed limit, but now it's a 40 it's probanly no quieter....

EA Free mornings behind the Italian I think he means, used to have the register arrival signs but now gone.

Glad you enjoyed your trip. We have been out for the last three long weekends, as soon as the restriction on overnight stays was ended. Short hops upstream from Reading only as far as Goring and downstream to Cookham so far this year. The first weekend was very quiet, but much busier since then which has made finding mooring spots a bit of a challenge. Pretty much all the locks were manned at some point during our trip, but without assistants there will inevitably be spells on self service. The exceptions were Hurley where there had been trouble with large crowds congregating on the island and Mapledurham which has a popular footpath through the lock site, although that is now sorted and the lockkeeper is back on duty.

We had a few long conversations with some of the lockkeepers who were really happy to be back providing assisted passage and engaging with the boaters so all credit to them. The self service locks were not too much of a problem with most people being very sensible. There are always a few novice boaters and crews who find it a bit daunting, but I rather enjoy playing lockkeeper so I tend to race to the controls before anyone else can get there, although that is partly in case one of the newbies gets confused and presses the buttons in the wrong order leaving us stranded for a second cycle of the weir gates.

Lovely to see so many people enjoying the river on their boats, blow up canoes and paddle boards. There seem to be more and more wild water swimmers as well.

The upper bits, you only got half way.
Most of them don’t seem to have any form of propulsion

They also seem to go round in packs.........some sort of herd protection strategy perhaps.
Earwigging some of the conversations on the boats, one suspects the previous boat was a PWC of some description . :)
