I know some folk who went around the world in their Excalibur 'Sherpa Bill' some years back - before that they did many Round Britain races, AZABs, even an OSTAR or two, as well as a couple of ARCs.
Sailed one for many years.
Van der Stadt was a forerunner in laying up gelcoat and not knowing it's capabilities layed up heavy, very heavy. So this boat is like a brick sh**house it will last for many decades.
It has capacious stowage but heavy and cumbersome deck hardware and with its long keel rather slow in modern terms.
BUT this is a boat that will take you anywhere, anytime and I really wish that we hadn't sold ours in the following of fashion for lighter weight and more sprightly performance boats.
As mentioned I have owned my Excalibur for many years. I'll be happy to answer any questions you have about them. I've grown very attached to Avalon, she's an excellent sailing boat, very solid and very capable. Compared to modern 36 footers the accommodation is pretty limited, although headroom is good.
Which Excalibur are you looking at?
Feel free to send me a PM.
Enjoyed your web site. I am very tempted by an Excalibur for sale in Sweden. The only thing stopping me from slapping down the money is the draft at 1.8 metres. From Sweden to points South I have always gone via the European Canals (three different boats) and I feel a bit "locked in" if the only escape is via Biscay. I will view the boat during the week. Thanks to everyone for the replies.
And a smaller sister, the Pioneer 9. I had the more modern Pioneer 10 which was also an excellent boat but killed in marketing terms by the Contessa 32.
