I have a small motor boat ... a Soviet Krim 4m that is just pulled up the bank out of water for winter. To stop it being frozen into the ice. Last year for just getting it in use my Johnson 4.5 twin Seahorse was bolted on back. That engine stayed on back of boat all through autumn and winter.

Today I walked past it and thought ... bet the b'd starts .... Turned on fuel ... waited a little for fuel to fill carb ... took of engine cover to help throttle control by handing the carb lever direct (Johnson's of this model are terrible for the linkage / cable set-up sticking). Pulled start handle maybe 3 times ... VROOM ..... that's old fuel in there as well that's sat in the outboard tank ............ she revved ok ... everything fine ...

So why do others have trouble when I given my job am so lax with it ... I never have trouble ... ????

Started my 2 stroke 4 hp Yamaha last week after around 8 months inactivity on the old fuel on about the third pull. No one comments when they work but complain loudly when they don't, A bit like Ebberspacher's I suppose /forums/images/graemlins/ooo.gif

If only I was !

It's like the diesel I use on my boat. I blend diesel for road, industrial, agricultural use and it's shipped to all sorts of destinations in Europe and across Atlantic.
For my use ? I take the scrag ends left over from blend ops and use that. I have 2 oil drums in my barn. I started of 1 as good EN590 Road diesel, other as base crap diesel. It soon ended up as both having the same mix in ... plus the hundreds of cans / bottles I have as well.
The diesel is probably at low end of spec and is decidely 'dark' from the heating oil and LCO that is in it. There is no way I could ever put it in a modern car - it would fail Technical on exhaust !! But my boat engine plugs on and on ..... and on .......

I have decided that this year I will be more careful with my fuel /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif I am going to set up again my fuel circulation filter system that I have described on here at times :

Domestic water filter system ... 5 microns. Clear piping so you can see fuel moving through and colour...... small pump able to push fuel through the filter which usually has a 0.5 - 1 bar min. req't .... Pump not too quick as that can create problems with the filter. Return to tank must have good drop to stir up content.

Circulate till colour of fuel through piping is clear and bright. A T piece in the line can be used to draw of sample to clear glass to check.

Nothing fancy ... DIY shop has it all ... even plastic bins to have your fuel in !
