Looking at a possible boat upgrade that comes with a 200hp Evinrude outboard. A quick google comes up with a few horror stories with regards to reliability. I appreciate you will, generally, hear more bad than good on forums - but has anyone had first hand experience with these motors.

The motor appears to be in excellent condition with less than 400 hours, but has already had the powerhead replaced at great expense. Also, with the recent announcement the Evinrude has stopped outboard production - I am err’ing on the side of caution.

I an G1 and G2 certified and regularly have to replace injectors because of water in the fuel which causes them to rust internally, and these are not cheap. The other issue is the 3 yr service interval and 5 yrs! on the latest models. There is no way the gearbox oil will last so long, its always black on the high horsepower models, also if water gets in and is not detected soon enough its also expensive. People think its great not having an annual service as it saves them money, the problem is you can get a big bill when it does have a service. If you read the small print Evinrude specify an annual inspection but most owners din’t know this.
They are great engines but line any other make they need TLC if you don’t want to pay for it down the line, so check carfully the service history and that all the bulletins from Evinrude have been carried out.
