Hello all. I have recently acquired a rib with a 90 hp evinrude ficht outboard that runs well but seems a swine to start. So I'm hoping someone on the forum runs or has experience of this engine. I know nothing about outboards, inboards on main boat.

Engine has just been serviced professionally started fine when I bought it. Trying it on muffs on the trailer it takes for ever to start. I took it back to engineer who serviced it in case it was me and it started on 2nd attempt! typically. But never does for me.

The procedure shown and adopted is open tank vent, prime fuel bulb, power on, key and kill cord into ignition, turn key and at the same time lift coldstart lever. Now to me the starter motor should engage until the engine fires but it doesn't. It engages for maybe a second or two then disengages even if the key is still held in the start position. Then all I hear is the starter motor wirring until I turn off the ignition and on again. This to me doesn't sound right and I'm sure if it stayed engaged it would fire up easily. Engineer says its fine and as it started for him and then me in his presence difficult to argue. During the service they did identify a problem with the starter and changed the 'bendix' I think he called it, a part on the starter anyway.

Before taking it to another engineer I'm hoping someone can confirm if this is normal on these engines. Thanks in advance

If no joy and no help on this forum post on the johnson & Evinrude board at iBoats http://forums.iboats.com/forum/engine-repair-and-maintenance/johnson-evinrude-outboards but give full engine particulars ( incl hp and year and/or model number)

It sounds like the starter is dropping out of engagement. The engine has an inertia starter which throws the pinion into the flywheel teeth and should keep it there as long as the motor keeps turning.
The motor is bolted on to the side of the crankcase and is easy to remove.

However a bit more digging provides a picture of a starter for the V4 engine which does not appear to have either a bendix or a pre-engager. It looks as though it is in constant mesh. They may have meant they have replaced the pinion (the gear wheel).

I would get on the phone to a Johnson/Evinrude dealer and ask a couple of questions.

But thats just the motor. It drives a secondary shaft which carries the Bendix gear and pinion

Thanks both for response so far. Battery is brand new. For the short time the starter is engaging the engine spins fine and feel it would fire up immediately if it didn't disengage so quickly. There was no doubt in my mind that the starter motor is not engaging correctly but the engineer where I bought the engine on brokerage assured me it was fine. He has no reason to be anything other than honest with me, although not an evinrude dealership. Maybe a visit to an evinrude dealer is the answer.

Double check your battery state of charge and all the connections between it and the motor
