Hello,
I need to remove my 1988 Evinrude 9.9 cylinder head to scrape out the water passages. Can this be done with the engine still in the casing, please? It looks straightforward enough except that one corner of the head is part of an engine mount attached to the case. Also is it advisable to use any form of jointing when fitting the head with a new gasket?

You mean in the plastic cowling?

I did this last year on a different model of outboard, a Tohatsu 9.8 two-stroke - on it there's reasonable access with the lower cowling still present. I was able to clean out a lot of salt (actually I had the head off to replace the thermostat), but there was too little room to get the torque wrench in there to do the last 1 or 2 head bolts, and I had to buy a set of crows foot wrenches. If yours is a 4-stroke I'd guess there'd be more room once the head is off?

You should be able to find the answers to your questions in the (Seloc) service manual which covers your engine at
Boatinfo - 1971-1989 Evinrude Service manual
A proper manufacturers manual can be bought from Original outboard product and service manuals for Johnson, Evinrude, Gale, and OMC

Modern gaskets are usually coated and nothing else, neither grease nor jointing compound, should be used

You will find just about everything there is to know about Johnson and Evinrude 9.9 and 15 hp engines on Leeroy's ramblings

My lower casing seems to be cast aluminium and there is an engine mount attached to it and the cylinder head. it looks a bit tight to remove. I am wondering if there is anybody out there who has changed the head gasket on an Evinrude/Johnson 9.9 or 15hp of around 1988 with just the top cowling removed. This point does not seem to be covered in the manuals or Leroy's Ramblings.

If no one can help here post your question on the iBoats forum or the MarineEngine forum. or both.

Take the power head off the leg. It's not difficult. You only need a bit of separation to get at the head bolts.

Is that a 9.9 in your picture ?

Looks more like a 6 or 8 hp to me

I'm sure I've seen the picture before and i think I know whose engine it was it was
