evinrude 4hp pull cord snapped

Bit of a side question - I just picked up a Johnson 4hp engine, it has a missing screw - yes that missing screw which goes through the lid and into the recoil mechanism. The one only a buffoon would remove. So I need to rewind and refit the spring which has been released. Does anyone know what screw it is - as its missing obviously? I suspect a UNF bolt, but other than that I've no idea. Thanks in advance.

The screw many people remove if they dont read the manual!

You dont say exactly what model .... model number should be on a plate on the clamp bracket ... always quote it as it precisely identifies your model

However similar to this I guess ( same screw used on 4hp Johnsons and Evinrudes from 1981 to 1988)

Without doubt it will be an American thread , UNC or UNF ( many UNC sizes are for most practical purposes the same as Whitworth , only the angle being different.)
(#8 is a locking washer)

If you need to order any parts you will find the official parts lists at http://epc.brp.com/Index.aspx?lang=E&s1=c6f796bf-fe64-4fd0-9c3f-d4d4a7b20678
I buy parts when required from Oakley marine in Brighton ( aka Outboards-Direct)

You will find instructions for rewinding the pull cord. including diameter and length of the cord. in the manual at http://www.boatinfo.no/lib/evinrude/manuals/1971-1989johnsonevinrude.html#/0

I'd be very interested to hear if you fix your motor's starting problem, nyx2k, because my 40 plus has it too. Easy start from cold but white plug, hard starting hot - in fact last time out it wouldn't start at all until it had cooled a bit.

The bolts are 10 quid on line. Just wondered if anyone knew what size bolt they were as I think that’s a bit mental, cheers

You have part #4 which I assume it screws into so you will be able to determine the thread and you will easily be able to determine the length needed.

If you really cannot figure out the size try asking on the Johnson & Evinrude board of the iBoats forums. Someone there will know as sure as eggs are eggs.

Check that the spring is not damaged

Be sure to use the correct diameter of cord cut to the correct length. The length depends on the exact year model.

The chord is fine. I’ve got loads of bolts but all metric, so was hoping somone would just know the so I could order one on line. Not to worry, I’ll have to take the bit it screws into to a fastner place. Thanks
