Hi Everyone.

This is my first post on here so bear with me please. I'm a sea fisherman and have my dads old boat which has been sitting idol for 12 years on my mums drive way. Recently I have made plans to get it back in the sea. The engine on the boat hasn't been turned over in all them 12 years. Now I've had a quick look at it and the engine itself looks in very good condition when you take the lid off, the prop spins fine, spark plugs work. The fuel tank is rusty and the fuel line is perished so I'm getting new ones of those. A guy that my brother in law knows repairs and maintains his gardening machinery and has looked at it and feels he could get it going. He has taken the carb to clean it out and just waiting for the fuel tank to arrive.

The engine is an Evinrude 25 1978. (I could be wrong on the year)

Is there anything that you guys would recommend that I replace etc? I am completely new to engines of any sort so any help in the restoration of this engine would be most appreciated.

Ill put up some photos when I can.

Thanks in advance.

Ash

If it starts OK, then the only bit that would worry me is the cooling pump impellor. This pumps the water up from the lower unit to cool the engine. After 12 yrs, it must be a bit suspect.
I resurected a Johnson 5 twin after over ten years of sitting around. Surprisingly the impellor is still OK after around 30 yrs of use, but I would not trust it.

The model number will identify the year. It should be on a plate on the transom bracket. Usually port side. Evinrudes usually also have it stamped on a welch plug on the engine block somewhere. Always quote the model number when ordering spares.
See http://web.archive.org/web/20011223004806/http://www.evinrude.com/docktalk/modref/evmodyr/EHP25.html

Oakley marine (AKA Outboards direct) in Brighton are good for spares.

Some useful advice on reawakening an outboard which has been slumbering for a few years here:

Not everything will be applicable but a good bit will be relevant

Generally the iBoats forums are a good source of help and advice on outboards especially Johnson and Evinrude motors:
