If you’re a tourist, you do not need a visa for short trips to EU countries, Switzerland, Norway, Iceland or Liechtenstein. You can stay for up to 90 days in any 180-day period.

Perhaps the Spanish are not aware of the above .
It will be used to check if you are healthy and if you have a criminal record.

A quick look on Scuttlebutt will give details both good and bad comments regards ports of entry.
A bunch of our lads were going across entering via France. Suspect ,on reflection, they might want to head further north.
