Ships Woofey, This could end up as a political debate?? One of the great delights of sailing is to see the wildlife, for my family, the dolphine family are the tops. Its a pity that they dont bring in the legislation ASAP.

Yes, this a double blow. Both the mammals and the fish are under threat.
Pair trawlers take a sizeable proportion of the bass breeding stocks. I thought that for once we were going to act before the species had been driven close to extinction. I hope that the UK govt. are going to appeal.

Moral: Extract GB from the EU and bring in our own regulations.
Ban all foreign trawlers from GB waters. Use the RN to enforce! Shots across the bows etc.

One solution is to stop buying bass, so nobody bothers to go fishing for it.
OK, OK, I know that won't work. I love eating it too. But this article does make you stop and think.

The EC are obviously right in this matter. I am sure that careful monitoring of the situation will see a year on year decline in the number of cetaceans being trapped in pair fishing nets.

We would all be on the moral high ground for successfully protecting the dolphins.

Why does everyone assume that the EC has rejected a well argued and documented case? Is it impossible that the UK govt has made a cock of it? Or that the case is indeed weak?
If you listen to the "special pleading " groups, there is barely a species that isnt in danger of becoming extinct . And even when they are not - like whales - they still need to be protected. Havent they ever heard of crying wolf?
Personally, I reckon we should save the sea bass and eat environmentalists instead!

Come on, you're obviously no EU lover, and would equally happily say, "The EU has stopped our hardworking fishermen from making a living", if the EU had allowed the ban. If the Commission had said they couldn't make a ruling as it lay within national jurisdiction, then would you say that the EU were acting spineless - again!
Fishing is surely one of areas where it's sensible to have international rules and allowing all participating nations to enforce them.

Not so much not wanting to upset the French and Spanish, as knowing they wouldnt take any notice of it anyway, and any attempt at enforcement would cause mayhem, as anyone caught up in the blockades of recent years will know.
