EU Ensign instead of Red Ensign

Jolly good for the RYA. Three cheers.
It's high time (and well past high time) that the UK extracted itself from the creeping cancer of European law making and self-appointed perceived quasi dominance over OUR affairs and rights.
.
Hearts of Oak, Rule Britannia, Dambusters March, British Grenadiers, Land of Hope and Glory playing on the gramophone..........

I agree, I fly the Red Ensign plus this :)

By the way, what club does that burgee represent? St.Mawes SC by any cahnce?
And what is the "paying-off" type pennant?

Thanks for the drink!
It's Mylor YC. That's a Union Pennant ( a pity cos I'm all for Scotland leaving ). I wanted a Trafalgar pennant but I can't get hold of one. Magellan Flags don't seem to be in business any more, they are the only flag makers I can find that used to sell them. The Union Pennant is the closest to the Trafalgar one.

Glad I was close! Thanks for your response.
Happy days down there in the 50s-70s.

As for your quest for a Trafalgar pennant (of wich I have no knowledge) I used to work for a company in Darlington who made flagpoles and flags (of all designs etc). I'm sure that if you could supply a design/pic and dimensions I could get one made-up for you. I presume they are still trading, it's a while since I last visited them.
Harrison Brothers(Steeplejacks) Ltd., Borough Road, Darlington.
The family are very good friends of mine, so worth a try.

Incidentally, if anyone else is seeking a special design flag or whatever, try them.

UPDATE on Harrison Brothers.
That company is now "disolved" but their flapole and flag business is still going (apparently). Telephone number 01325 390195.
If Eric answers, tell him Robert put you in touch!!

The problem with flying whimsical flags from the stern is that it marks you out as a bit of a joker or, to be more sympathetic, having children on board.

More seriously it fuels the mistrust of leisure sailors from our professional brothers, politicians and minor bureaucrats.

I think is clear that Part III (SSR) or any other pleasure vessel not registered at all is a "pleasure vessel", NOT a "ship"

You misunderstand the purpose of the SSR It is there so that you can register you boat as a British ship if you qualify. The MSA covers all ships, boats, yachts or whatever labels you want to put on them. The purpose of the Red Ensign is to identify your ship as British to other states. Alternatives such as blue ensigns and defaced ensigns if used properly are accepted under the MSA as alternatives. The right to use the SSR is based on residence, whereas the Part 1 register is open to a wider range of owners, but from the identification perspective of the flag state the two registers are the same.

Merchant Shipping Act 1995:

5 Duty to show British flag.

(1)Subject to subsection (2) below, a British ship, other than a fishing vessel, shall hoist the red ensign or other proper national colours—
(a)on a signal being made to the ship by one of Her Majesty’s ships (including any ship under the command of a commissioned naval officer)...

Is this signal defined in any way ? Or just delivered by loudhailer by a red-faced man with a big moustache ?

I do have a red flag on board but never fly it as I don't have a flag pole and the palaver of putting the bloody thing up and down all the time rather gets in the way of sailing. If those around me care about such things, they haven't told me yet.

I would rather enjoy flying a blue EU ensign; the red one is a bit pointless for me because I've never really seen myself as being either English or British (don't really know what either means, to be honest), but I am very proud to be European.

I think it used to be common practice for sailors to fly a false Ensign so you can sneak up on the French. If you do you are not covered by the Geneva convention.
So you might be shot.

Quote when I gave an EU flag to an American friend " why are you giving me a German flag or is it French?"
