Etaps and Osmosis

Hi,

I'm in the process of buying an Etap 26 and wondered if anyone had any experience of these boats suffering from osmosis? I've had a survey and although moisture readings on the boat are reasonably high (but not unusual for a 17 year old boat) there is no evidence of blisters etc... I just wondered if any other Etap owners out there had had any problems in this department?

Cheers,

David

I bought a boat with high moisture reading - It had been left in the water for two previous winters. It was taken out and dried during the Summer months and when checked was seen to be reverting to a more normal level. The surveyor told me that it was then safe to buy it. It is a good idea if the boat is laid up on land to send the surveyor back in a week or two to check it again. Also check the hull over as carefully as possible - you are only looking for small blisters you know. That could mean big trouble.

I would also try offering the owner a "Suspect Osmosis" price - about £3000 below the asking and see what happens, this would then go to having the bottom stripped and reepoxied if needed. It worked in my case and still my hull is ok.

Be sure to winter the boat on dry land if you buy it!!
