Essex teak

The search for teak is becoming a real problem for all boaties. I found 5 teak framed doors being thrown out into a skip!!

Also got a teak door from a local council waste/recycle website.

Do you think teak is teak is teak, or are there different grades for marien use??? Will mt second hand teak doors be ok to use once milled?

Depends on what teak it is. But most of it is useful to a greater or lesser degree.

I know that Roach Sailing Association is always looking for cheap woods to use as repair for their myriad of wooden boats. If you want rid of it, please let me know.

In the early 80's I used to work at Union Veneers in East London.

They supply veneered sheeting materials and matched veneers.

I really don't know if they supply direct, but if not, i'm sure they will tell you the number of your nearest stockist.

For an importer of hardwoods based in Essex, you need E.O.Burton near Brentwood. I haven't ever bought anything from them, but I saw their retail counter when i discovered them in passing a few years ago.

This website has some further detail.

I expect to be getting my spindle moulder out along with my other woodworking tools to knock up some solid teak panelled doors and other bits of joinery in the not too distant future. Can't wait!

I get it for vice versa!

Re Searush's & Bosun's reports, I get rocketed when the Telepathy doesn't work!
She thinks at me, I don't receive that particular message, I get rocketed.
Of course, the other way round, when she doesn't receive, it's my fault too.

Oh and try Northshore Yachts, Itchenor, joinery shop skip for all sorts of offcuts- on the public footpath from the harbour office, westwards- i've seen woodturners and modellers turn up with a car and trailer!

burtons only do solid timber no sheet materials , i picked up a nice lump of iroko for a mainsheet traveller base from them this year and asked about faced ply etc etc

I have bought small pieces of teak from Dauntless Boatyard at Canvey Island in the past. If I needed some now I would go and see them.

I would like to make a small box to go on my pedalstel so I can mount a garmin 551 chartplotter.

Can anyone give me an idea on the best place to buy some teak wood from in Essex?
Or online?

Thanks in advance

A few weeks ago I was looking for the same. If you do a search on hardwood ply/veneers/marine etc, you should find some suppliers. I think Robbins do half and qaurter sheets, and have a full price list. At least it gives you a benchmark. As far as I recall, full sheets could go up to several hundred pounds, yes...
I also found local-ish timber merchants have some supplies, but as always there is variable quality, particularly of the underlying ply...
