I would like to make a small box to go on my pedalstel so I can mount a garmin 551 chartplotter.

Can anyone give me an idea on the best place to buy some teak wood from in Essex?
Or online?

Thanks in advance

Do you have the training and experience to be allowed to work with such a valuable natural resource as teak? If I had my way only people who had undertaken at least a week's training in basic woodworking should be allowed to touch unfinished teak.

PS Please read http://www.ybw.com/forums/showthread.php?t=235673 before responding to my post.....

ken

for your information, allthough my english grammer may be rubbish I can make up for it.
I am a fully qualified marine engineer and I have worked on many large grey ships as a carpenter.

So in respect of my being trained to work with wood, yes I am, and I'm probably more qualified than you to do this very simple job.

P.s you did not mention anything about where I can get hold of teak, is this because you was being an @rse? Or did you just forget??!!

Soory I should have been clearer. I was taking the piss.

Ken might know the difference between Teak & Teak Faced Ply ;)

Actually sailorman, I thought it was obvious I wanted teak ply when I state I'm making a box to go on the pedastal!

Cheaky bugger

in response to the boatyard, no afraid not, otherwise I would of tried this option.

With a decent training course you could probably use a Yellow Pages to find a Timber Merchant. But make sure that the word "Hardwoods" is incuded in their ad.:D

Nota Bene;
You are going to get a lot more teasing about training - and calling people "arses" will only make the situation worse.;)

Seriously tho', good luck with your search - but why not use an English Hardwood like Oak, Ash or similar. They are just as durable & appropriate for marine use. Why do you need the extra hardness of Teak for a trinket like that?

Edit:
I see you've decided to go to Marine ply instead - fair enough, you can widen your search to include Builder's Merchants, but you may need to buy a whole sheet! Another idea is Building Reclamation companies, they get loads of recovered panelling, pine floorboards, and decent hardwood doors. Good hunting.

I know, I'm starting to wish I never voiced my views in either thread!

The yellow pages is a smashing idea, except I don't have one!

Regarding other wood, everthing else on the boat is teak, teak cockpit teak stuff inside, teak everything. I thought a varnished bit of hard wood would look out of place. It maybe something to look into though when I get back to sivalisation, doing all this on the iPhone at the mo!

Even an unhelpfull one may be willing to sell you an off cut . Failing that your local timber yard will be able to put in an order for one sheet from someone like timbmet silverman . They can tag one sheet onto thier order but you will have to wait untill the need a delivery .
How big is the piece you need ?

SWMBO has been trying to train me for 40 years, but I still haven't got the hang of it. Mind you, on the odd occasion when I have succeeded & finished a sentence for her she gets really wound up? I don't understand this, I expected my success to be rewarded - it is normal training practice.

Yeah, I have editted my first post. But ply is so naff isn't it? You'd think a real ship's chippy would want to do a proper job with dovetails & all wouldn't you?

So true!:D

Just been on a quest for teak myself, thro' the net, I've come up with 2 suppliers Brook Bros of Maldon & TJ Howells (I think) of Poole I need to repair my rubbing strake - advice on bending & scarfing same would be welcomed.

Off the top of my head a figure of 7:1 springs to mind for scarfs, but no doubt a real expert will pop by with the facts shortly. I replaced the front Port half of the rubbing strake of my Westerly 25 many years ago. I took the actual scarf dimensions from an existing joint on the other side. I think I cut the scarfe so that the new bit slipped under the existing bit.

I tried steaming the wood (actually Iroko rather than Teak IIRC) but didn't get anything like enough steam to it. I bolted it tight amidships (by the joint) & had to use a Spanish windlass (Google it) to pull in the bow. I fastened one bolt at a time as they came within reach. It took some time, but little by little, it was possible to get the next nut on the next bolt & gently tighten them up. There was so much force required that I thought I might pull the hull out of shape, but them old Westerlys is damn strong! I think I took a couple of days to get it all bolted down tight & then clean off the excess sealant.

Teak suppliers

I have bought teak from Robbins of Bristol via web/phone. I think they and Howells (already mentioned) are the experts.

Depends where in Essex you are. I have also bought teak from Robin Duke of "Duke and Brown" in Wimbish near Saffron Walden (01799 516084), but that's not really deepest Essex. I'm not sure Robin keeps teak in stock, and I cleaned him out by making an offer for all his offcuts last time I was there.

teak for free

The search for teak is becoming a real problem for all boaties. I found 5 teak framed doors being thrown out into a skip!!

Also got a teak door from a local council waste/recycle website.

Do you think teak is teak is teak, or are there different grades for marien use??? Will mt second hand teak doors be ok to use once milled?
