I'll be taking youngest son and a couple of his mates on a 'post A level' cruise next week, which will probably mean Dad driving them round a water born pub crawl. We'll probably be sticking around the Crouch/Blackwater/Colne areas. Any suggestions of suitable pubs (first night will be in Burnham)?

gosh... spoilt for choice!

Start with a raft of Burnham pubs.... then the Green Man at Bradwell... the George and Dragon on Foulness..... several to choose from in Brighlingsea... ditto West Mersea..... I could go on..... but could your liver? /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Maldon is certainly worth a stop for a couple at high water, and overnight perhaps in Heybridge basin if the tides are right, with a choice of two pubs.

Other interesting high water possibilities are the pubs at Wivenhoe and Rowhedge.

Burnham.
The White Harte keeps excellent Adnams and has a traditional atmosphere. The Anchor probably a bit livelier for 18 year olds, better chance of a fight there.
The Ship or The Victoria in High St can be good at certain times.
Foulness.
George & Dragon is interesting and has advantage of long walk back to sober up. Excellent example of traditional grumpy landlord. Good value.
Paglesham.
Stopped going to Plough & Sail years ago. Anyone know what it's like now?
North Fambridge.
My favourite but being taken over by yuppy incomers a bit.

No doubt you will have non drinking "designated sailor" to avoid being caught navigating whilst intoxicated?

Don't forget to plan the food stops too Duncan , there's a nice kebab place and a very good indian takeaway in Burnham , plus a good selection of after drunk food outlets , sorry , did I say drunk , must be a misprint , surely I meant after dark

Is the Anchor the one on the quay? If so has the food improved recently? Been a few times in the last few years (admittedly not in the last 12 months or so) and it was always very disappointing - like so many pubs which try to do upmarket food these days it reads really well on the menus but when it comes it's at best an overpriced triumph of hope over effort. Maybe it's improved, I hope so!

queens head at Maldon (this is the one which the barge crews hang out in the jolly sailor is nice but more touristy), the Blue Boar again at maldon admans on tap and live jazz on thurs night, Haybridge basin very nice especially during the summer tend to go more for the ship as right by the lock.

A few alternatives to those already suggested:

Wivenhoe: Black Buoy (free house)
Brightlingsea: Yachtsman's Arms (Greene King)
West Meresea: Pubs cr*p. Yacht Club (food good, Adnams - need I say more?) Company Shed - if you can get in (seafood only - bring your own wine)

Above Osea Island you'll have to dry out overnight (the boat, that is) unless locking into Heybridge Basin.

Goldhanger creek (behind Osea Island). Very peaceful: Chequers (oak beams, v. good food, beer OK)

Maldon Hythe Quay: Maldon Little Ship Club (food limited, beer OK, great views, especially from upper deck)
Maldon town centre: Blue Boar Hotel - 10 mins walk from Hythe Quay (oak beams, v. good food, Adnams + on-site Farmers brewery).

Hope this is helpful.
