Essential tools/spares to have on board?

Been through this on several previous threads. I won't list my enormous range of tools on a tiny boat. I have found that, over time, I have come to organise them by task. E.g., I have a stove maintenance tuppaware that has good examples of the three spanners I need to do anything to the stove and a dose of frequently needed spares.

I have have four small general tool boxes:
Mechanical - spanners etc
Electrical - soldering, crimping, tape, strippers, fuses etc
Rigging - palm, fids, spikes, thimbles needles
Goop - oil, grease, dry lube, sikaflex, glue

Umpteen boxes of fastenings - bolts, nuts, screws, nails, washers,....

This relates to a previous thread about quality vs cheap spanners. I have decent spanners for all of the mission critical tasks (so far discovered!) and cheap sets for completeness.

This was what ws in our lockers for long distance sailig it doesn't detail tools:

Quote:A couple of metal coat hangers. ....Mike[/QUOTE]

A length of 3-4mm rigging wire approx' 1.5m long very useful for unblocking cockpit drains, fridge drain, bilge pump discharge point... anywhere where the drain hole is longer than an extended coat hanger. this item has proved invaluable on many an occasion

I do carry many of the tools and spares mentioned but the thing I use the most, and try never to sail without, is kitchen roll.

Disappointment, that the two most important "tools" have been missed:-

an Led head torch and a pair of short-focal length glasses.
It's damn all use having all the tools in the world if you can't see what you're doing or focus because of those damned varifocal lenses.

Aren't they taken as norm?
low pwr led in pocket at night, cree and 12v halogen as search light, strobes, 12v led inspection.
Reading and magnifying glasses of various strengths.

Some replies to this thread are listing spare parts and repair materials.

The Question refered to tools.

Just read the OP again and that lists spares too!

No mention of a hammer? A hammer is a VERY usefull tool.

Sounds fine,

Got everything mentioned so far:)

Race oriented son no 1 complains about weight of the stuff I carry on board. Until something needs inspirational fixing!!

Carry whatever you are comfortable with , you still might need to borrow something else in an emergency.

Almost everybody is in the same situation..
