An interesting little project

We've been off the radar for quite a while, if you'll excuse the nautical pun there. It's been a busy time with us leaving Malaysia, entering Thailand, hauling out at PSS Boatyard, Satun, finding a house, emptying Esper of our worldly goods and preparing our beautiful but tired boat for a strip down.

Esper's refit is a monumental project. At the very least we'll be stripping her of her gelcoat, her teak deck, her masts and rigging and her electronics. If we're lucky, we might just strip her insides too. Having spent the last five days lugging box after box of stuff we're flabbergasted at the amount of cr4p we've accumulated in the last eight years! Fortunately the yard was there to help, and so too was our project manager, Un.

We plan to run a weekly refit update on followtheboat, complete with pictures and video clips. Today's entry, therefore, runs through an introduction to the project all the work achieved in the last five days. It's impressive stuff, but we've been working from 8am and only plan to take Sundays off... until it all gets too much and we need a break!

Not a nice sight

Without further ado, take a look at the photos and the three video clips (too much stuff to include here), including one of Esper being hauled out on the cradle system, and a fishing boat being launched. If you've never seen this before, its worth a peek. Check out this link:

There is something on your link which crashes my Ipad

Mine too. Running OS7.

Shame as I love seeing others working hard whilst I look at my jobs list. Best of luck with it all...

Sorry, chaps, but this has been tested on an ipad running OS7 and it works ok. Are there any specific error messages? I'll continue to investigate but I've checked with a few mates and all ok their end. Not much more I can recommend other than to get yourself an Android ;)

Hehe, and that pic was taken AFTER I'd removed quite a bit of it. Blame the previous owner, he liked chopping up cables and leaving loose ends. Should be interesting to get a before and after picture. Wish me luck though!

iPad on 5.1 sees it fine but on 7 it loads the text then crashes. Tried from your site and the link given. No worried though I'll be watching progress and learning from the work desk PC.

Good luck with it all
Dave

We will be in Nakorn Si Thammarat about 150 miles NE of you on the other side for 6 week starting 14 Feb. Visiting Son and first Grandchild (girl) would love to pop down and see you if we can.

Hi Dave,

One friend with an ipad 3 said it bombed, whilst others with the ipad 5 was ok. The one with the ipad 3 knows his onions so we're having a look at my site and why it crashes the ipad. I'm guessing you're using Safari? Seems there is a broken script that doesn't affect anything other than the ipad and Safari is supposed to be a bit delicate when running scripts. It even loads ok on my underpowered Android Samsung Tab7. Whatever, thanks for bringing it to my attention. Hope you enjoy the progress reports.

Looks like a lot of work - I assume you will be keeping her after all the work is done ??

Hi Ian,

after we arrived in Malaysia we did consider selling Esper. We were battered, emotionally drained and were pining for home. We thought about selling her and buying something closer to home (aged parents, families growing up etc). We got over that, however, and decided some money spent on our current boat, which we love, would be money better spent than buying another boat with the proceeds. It would have been a compromise and neither of us really want to sell Esper. After the money and heartache of doing a refit, selling her will be the last thing on our minds! Finally, we'll have her exactly as we want her, or as close as.

Quite a long list I must say let alone the hotvac procedure. Did you really find there a specialist for this job?

Hi George,

It's not the Hotvac procedure, at least the yard does not claim to be undertaking the Hotvac procedure. However both Liz and I have read up on the treatment and are monitoring their progress. I'm confident they know what they're doing.

Sat in a cafe , supping a cappuccino and looking at your video, looks like a LOT of work to me , I rebuilt my old tub in the UK under a tarpaulin, took me 9 months to replace plates and rebuild the interior to a point I was happy with it I did most of the work myself as I didn't like the prices quoted or trust the contractors, think I prefer the cafe and cappuccino , good luck , keep the videos and pics coming, gives me something to do before going back to work !

Hehe, second week's installment coming tomorrow. Enjoy the coffee (cos I can't seem to find coffee beans here) :)

Hi Jamie and Liz,
I noticed how you placed the panels and although I esthetically much prefer it instead of the usual arc at the stern, I still hesitate to change for the fear of a possible damage when berthing stern-to as we always do in Greek places. Did you ever had any problem with this installation? I take it that "flaps' are brought down during the procedure.

Ha! Well funny you should ask, perhaps you should read this first: http://followtheboat.com/2009/07/21/my-big-fat-greek-tragedy

However, please put the escapade in context. If I hadn't have hit that boat with the panel, I'd have destroyed something else instead. If I were to redesign my pushpit arrangement, I'd design it exactly the same way. And for the record, we ARE redesigning the pushpit and we WILL be hanging the panels in exactly the same way. As you say, those gantry things look so ugly and Esper has such beautiful lines ;)
