Whilst there's Bristol channel newbie questions being asked... (spoon feeding please)

With the weather gods being "fair" (are they ever) . Newport start, Milford Haven (Dale) finish?

I'm thinking leave the mouth of the Usk at HW, by LW get to Swansea?

Could I punch the tide (being further West) onwards arriving on a falling tide or am I being too optimistic? Should I lock into Swansea, leave HW and arrive at the Dale at LW or on a rising tide?

Ideally I would like to do it in one shot, non stop within 24hrs.

I know I should dig out the charts but local knowledge is king, and I would like to hear from people who've done it.

I'm guessing a SW wind will make it a pain but what I'll probably get...?

Then the Dale to Pwllheli....

Hi Tom
I've done it from Cardiff in one shot in about one day but now I usually
anchor in Mumbles Roads over the flood, which, if you consult the tidal atlas,
can be quite strong at springs. Locking in to Swansea is a big waste of time.
If you want fish and chips better go via Ilfracombe and berth alongside
the "Dolphin" seafood restaurant.
More on Saturday.

Hi Doug, thanks for the reply, this question is going to be one of the things I was going to ask at the meet, when people are heading round, timing etc. But the meet is Sunday 12th, not Saturday!

I had a good conversation with the previous owner lastnight. he took the boat round to Barmouth for the 3 peaks yacht race in 2004, said he did the it in one (Newport to Barmouth), in a westerly 7! He said Milford Haven is about 22 hours so that gives me an idea of what to expect.

See you Sunday.
