It's this picture of the Westerley that scares me. Look at the bright yellow glow coming down the companionway.

Fair point. However, I don't think any colour for those bits other than white, cream, wooden or varnished works. Even a cream has to be pretty subtle - those horrible pinky-orange Island Packets are an abomination.

Out of semi-idle curiosity, how much would it cost to remove the deck/cockpit paint to a good standard? I presume all the hardware would require lifting and some sort of grit blasting operation should do it probably followed by a respray of the original gelcoat. I don't think a simple paint overcoating job would the leave a new owner feeling proud of his boat.

Aesthetics aside, from a safety point of view - literally ! - doesn't a yellow deck & coachroof make more sense than a yellow hull, as in really serious conditions or if swamped, that's the bit most likely to be visible to other boats and aircraft ?

I can imagine some bits would have to be grey or something to cut down glare in sunlight for the crew.

Incidentally for years now I have always painted the bottom of my rigid tenders yellow, so they may attract attention if and when I really cock it up.

This theory works, as when a chum managed to capsize my old tender I'd sold to him, he was left hanging onto the inverted dinghy in a wide bit of the harbour in waves, but he was fairly soon spotted by a passing rescue boat.
