Epoxy Primer or Self Etching Primer

Here we go again - nothing is simple.

Having done a bit of online research into priming my alluminium saildrive leg I have discovered two possible approcahes:

1: Epoxy Primer followed by Undercoat and Antifoul

or

2: Self Etching Primer followed by the same.

I plan to use some Sea Jet underwater primer which has done a great job on the bare metal keel but the Sea Jet website recommends Epoxy Primer (their own barnd) and not a self etching primer.

As usual one is about three times the cost of the other...

Can anyone shed any light on what the risks are of going with option 2 above.

i think you will find that the use of a self etching primer has been superseded by an epoxy primer

International have discontiued the self etching primer they used to suggest for priming aluminium.

It has been replaced by Interprotect

I think similar will apply to other popular brand names


Follow the advice of the paint manufacturer.
If you are planning to use SeaJet products follow the advice in their technical literature

Which is I think you will find to use Seajet 017 Epoxy Bonding Primer For Alloys which they claim has superior performance compared to etching primer

We always use self etching primer before painting. As it says on the tin it etches the aluminiun so you can be sure the paint sticks. The aluminium must be clean and grease free for it to work. If it doesn't change colour when dry you need to scrape it off, make sure it really is clean, and try again.

As it is now discontinued I would very wary of the age of
self-etch in stock.
Go with the epoxy primer. The paint manufacturer knows more than we do.
You almost need a masters degree in chemistry to use paint or varnish these days.
