Just replaced the transom on a boat of mine using a mixture of west systems epoxy and polyester resign fibreglass.

The colloidal silica is quite nice to work with. I got a big tub of it and 6 litres of epoxy resin etc, along with a few meters of woven roving etc etc. All worked really well. Just need to finish it off cosmetically now

Good stuff... Hopefully I'll have similar results with my little project.

I am assuming that you intend to sand this layer.

Do be aware that epoxy dust is nasty stuff and it often has a cumulative effect leading to a serious allergy issue.

Ask me how I know this.

You must be very unlucky, I have been covered in the stuff at least a thousand times over a 40 year stretch and am fitter than most at my age, stll working everyday and most weekends, all fibreglass work for the last 8 or 9 years.

Perhaps the Devil really does look after his own.

Make sure when you mix in your microballoons, that you make it really, really thick and gooey. Proper peanut butter, peaks stand, won't run off spoon consistency. This will make it easier to sand, and make your resin go further.

Hm you are lucky perhaps it was polyester you were working with? That does not bother me.

I don't know the stats on this but I personally know of three people whose epoxy allergy is now so serious now they are at risk of acute respiratory problems if they come in contact with the dust.

My problem is not so serious but I am pretty ill if I am around the stuff now. Docs i have spoken to on the subject say that the reaction to epoxy builds up with time. It certainly did with me. The trigger I think was dry sanding some large [ 1m sq ]areas of epoxy when I was about 35. Up until then I was OK. Now I know within minutes if I have been exposed.

I enter boatyards with care nowadays.
