Before I bought my new (pre-used ) boat I was informed the grp hull was epoxy treated as a preventive measure. The '79 hull is fine but I wonder.... does this epoxy last for ever ?

Nothing lasts for ever. Boats are consumer durables not everlastings! View an old boat epoxy coated with suspicion.

As I understand it, epoxy is one of the best adhesives there is, apart from being used to drastically reduce water absorption, so it should stick to the hull and last as long as the laminations at least. Subject of course to it being applied in suitable conditions. have you got some paper work to show that it was done commercially or evidence for moisture content levels when applied - whether under cover- ambient temp. etc ?

Don't worry - no boat has ever sunk through developing pox.

Having just bought a new yacht which was epoxyied before launch in 1989 the survey found that the hull had not been abraded before epoxy was put on and has not stuck as it should have.Although moisture readings are low I will now remove all epoxy and reaply. If your hull is dry I see reason to be concerned. It turns out that the epoxy was put on by a " proper" professional yacht ing boatyard.Regards John
