Epoxy ---again

I'v used West epoxy for years without any problems but recently I "painted" a coat onto new mahogany and although it appears to have "gone off" there is still a sticky residue which feels oily to touch which doesn't seem to wipe off. Anyone any ideas prior to asking West ???? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

amine blush? west is a bit prone to this anbd cold weather makes it worse. should wash off with detergent and warm water. alternatively, poor mixing / not enough hardener?

I`ve had this problem once and it was nothing to do with the wood. What happened was that one of the plastic sleeves that fit around the shafts of the A pump set and determine how much is dispensed per stroke had become displaced so the ratio was wrong. Caused me a lot of grief before I noticed it. Might be worth a look!

Cheers Birdseye for your quick reply . I use their mini pumps so mix seems ok . Will try washing with detergent tomorrow . BTW can you explain Amine blush or have I just asked a stupid question ??

The link will answer the question on amine blush. Try warm water, detergent and scotchbrite.

I have had the same problem as twisterowner, but the epoxy usually went off eventually. Worse was the result of not mixing properly since it left a layer of unmixed resin dotted about. but you would detect that in what was left in your mixing cup.

I can second what Twisterowner said. Those pumps are a piss poor design. Even tho logic tells you there's something wrong with the mix (its to dark and you're using a disproportionate amount of hardener) because its being delivered by pump you cling to the niave notion that it must be right.

Question for Twisterowner - is this something that happened to you? what was the outcome? Did you redo the work?
