Entry Level Handheld GPS

bought a used Garmin 12 off the Tesco's ads board in our local store for £35. Very happy, despite it being a discontinued product.

Got myself a Garmin Etrex "standard yellow model" from gpsonlineshop through ebay for 80 quid plus 20 for a 12v power/pc cable
only been out over the common with it so far, but seems to be marvelous!
very pleased! could easily have spent a bit more and got a bit more, but glad I didn't, it already does more than I wanted it for.

PS: GPSonlineshop seem to be a backroom concenrn of 'Carrington Carpets Ltd' but were very good and delivered fast to germany.

Excuse my ignorance - novice sailor, equipping new MAB and replying to a very old post ... but I was researching gps handhelds - novice sailor, equipping "new" MAB.
I thought the idea of handheld gps was partly to have it in cockpit. But then no connection to GMDSS, also risk of loss /damage, so your plan sounds good. I didn't know you could have a fixed repeater from a handheld. Is it expensive? Is it easy to set up? Presume it just repeats lat/long, not rolling road?
Any more info/advice welcome.
Thanks.

Basic eTrex .....

Its all I use for my nav .... and coupled with PC - its as good as any .... OK so you can buy with WAAS etc. - but now that SA is switched off - I'm VERY HAPPY .... it fits in the pocket, hangs around neck etc. etc.
I use it inside my boat - usually stays on lock .......

It has a sort of mapping ability ..... draws a track of where you've been and will remember it as well ....

For basic use it is fine ........ I only wish it had antennae remote possibility .......

Prices ....

Sorry but I completely disagree about prices on GPS Handhelds ..... I bought a Garmin 50 many years ago and it cost a small fortune !! The eTrex I bought a while ago was less than half the price and has much more functions and ability ..... smaller, easier to use, locks on faster etc. etc.

Problem is the entry models now are far more advanced than they were not so many years ago and so its difficult to compare like with like .....

For same money

there are many other - including the eTrex with trac-back, routes, etc. etc. incl. data cables, 12V etc. etc.

In fact it seems biggest bargains in package deals at moment is in the recent discon lines and secoind-hands where people go for the newer versions .... same as VHF's etc.
